For a beginner, a Bluetooth adapter that is listed as compatible with your chosen app is the right path. The BimmerCode and BimmerLink apps publish lists of supported adapters, and a generic ELM327 clone may not be on them. Check the app's own list before you buy, because compatibility is decided by the app, not by the adapter's box.
Which OBD2 scanner works with BMW?
Any BMW sold with a 16 pin OBD2 port under the dash can talk to a generic reader for basic fault codes. Generic readers use the standard emissions side of the system. That covers engine fault codes and some live data on most petrol and diesel cars.
BMW-specific work is different. Reading airbag, ABS, gearbox or comfort modules, or changing coded settings, needs an app written for BMW. The usual beginner pairing is a Bluetooth adapter with an app such as BimmerCode for coding or BimmerLink for diagnostics and some performance data. Adapters such as the vLinker range from Vgate are commonly named by those apps, but always confirm on the app's current supported list, as it changes.
Will an ELM327 adapter work with BimmerCode?
Sometimes, and that is the problem. ELM327 is a chip standard, not a guarantee. Genuine and well made adapters can work, while many cheap clones have trouble with the connection BMW cars need for coding. We cannot tell you that a given generic adapter will work with BimmerCode, and we have not tested one here.
What to do:
- Open the app's adapter page and read the supported list.
- Match the adapter name and version to that list.
- If it is not listed, treat it as a basic code reader only.
Our ELM327 listings, such as the ELM327 V2.1 Bluetooth reader, are described for reading fault codes. Use them for that, and do not assume they will code your car.
Bluetooth vs WiFi OBD2 adapters
Both send data to your phone. The difference is how they connect and which phone they suit.
| Type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Quick to pair, keeps your phone online | Some cheap units pair poorly, and iPhone support depends on the adapter type |
| WiFi | Often works with iPhones and PCs | Your phone leaves its normal network while connected |
The apps matter more than the radio. Check whether your phone (iPhone or Android) is supported by both the adapter and the app. Our ELM327 WiFi V1.5 reader is listed for Android, iOS and PC use as a basic code reader.
What can a beginner code or diagnose safely?
Start with reading, not writing. Reading fault codes and clearing a code you understand is low risk. Changing coded settings is higher risk, because a wrong change can cause warnings or odd behaviour.
- Safe to start: read fault codes, view live data, check battery and sensor values.
- Take care: coding comfort options, lighting and display settings. Back up the original settings first and change one thing at a time.
- Leave to a professional: airbags, steering wheel, headlight internals, wiring and anything that stores safety settings.
Keep the battery healthy and the car on a charger during any coding session. A low battery mid-write is a real way to cause trouble. Coding rules and options vary by chassis, so see our find your chassis page if you are not sure of your car.
Wired K+DCAN or Bluetooth adapter?
A wired K+DCAN cable plugs into a laptop and is the older method, used with desktop software. It is steadier for long jobs because the cable does not drop. It is also more technical, and the software is harder for a newcomer.
Which suits you?
- Bluetooth with an app: simplest, good for a beginner, supports the newer cars when the app lists the adapter.
- Wired K+DCAN with a laptop: better for older cars and deeper work, with a steeper learning curve.
Newer BMW models may need a different connection type for full access, so read the app's notes for your chassis. Our engine code reader and similar units stay within basic diagnostics.
How do I connect an OBD2 adapter to a BMW?
- Find the 16 pin port, usually under the dash on the driver's side, near the knee area.
- Plug the adapter in firmly.
- Switch the ignition on. For most jobs you do not need to start the engine, but follow the app's advice.
- Pair the adapter in your phone's settings if it is Bluetooth, then open the app.
- Select the adapter inside the app and let it find the car.
- Unplug the adapter when you finish, as some stay powered and may drain the battery over days.

FAQ
Which adapter should a beginner buy for BimmerCode?
One named on the BimmerCode supported adapter list. Check that list on the day you buy, since it is updated.
Is a cheap ELM327 safe for coding?
We do not recommend assuming so. Use it to read codes. For coding, pick an adapter the app lists.
Can I damage my car with an OBD2 adapter?
Reading is low risk. Coding carries more risk, so back up settings, use a charger and change one setting at a time.
Does it work on every BMW?
Basic reading works on cars with a 16 pin port. Coding support depends on the app and chassis, so check the app's vehicle list.
