Find your chassis code
BMW names each generation of a model with a chassis code, such as E90, F30 or G20. Parts are made for specific chassis codes, and two cars sold under the same model name can need different parts. Knowing your chassis code is the surest way to order the right part.
Three ways to find your chassis code
1. Decode your VIN
Your 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) is printed on your registration document and on the label in the driver's door pillar. The chassis code is not written in the VIN directly: characters 4 to 7 are BMW's type code, which identifies the exact model variant but is not the E, F or G code. Enter the full VIN into a free online BMW VIN decoder. It shows the chassis code, the production date and the factory options, which also helps with parts that depend on options.
2. Check the door-pillar label
Open the driver's door and look at the label on the door pillar. It shows the VIN and, on many cars, the month and year of production. The production date tells you whether your car is a pre-LCI or LCI (facelift) version.
3. Use your registration document and the table below
Your registration document shows the model and the date of first registration. Find the series in the table and match the years. Where two generations overlap, check the VIN to be sure, because a car can be registered months after it was built.
BMW chassis codes by series
Select a chassis code to see the parts we list for it. Years are approximate production years. LCI is BMW's name for a mid-life facelift; where we give an LCI year, parts such as lights and bumpers often differ before and after it.
