BMW F30 Cup Holder Light Not Working? How to Replace It

If the light in your F30 cup holder has stopped working, the small LED module is the usual cause. It can be replaced without touching the rest of the console. The part you need depends on whether the car is pre-LCI or LCI, so check that first.

Why is my BMW cup holder light not working?

The ambient light in the centre console is a small LED unit. It is not a bulb you can swap on its own in most cases. Common causes:

  • The LED unit has failed with age or heat.
  • The plug under the trim has worked loose, often after the console was removed or knocked.
  • Liquid has spilled into the cup holder area and reached the connector.
  • A fault in the wider ambient lighting circuit, not just the cup holder.

Check the other ambient lights first. If the door and footwell lights work and only the cup holder is dark, the module or its plug is the likely fault.

Pre-LCI vs LCI cup holder lights: which colour?

The F30 saloon ran from 2011 to 2019, with the LCI facelift around 2015. The F31 Touring, F32 coupe and F20 1 Series follow their own dates, so check the chassis reference on the find your chassis page.

Light colour and the connector can differ between pre-LCI and LCI cars. We have not found a rule that holds for every car, so do not rely on the year alone. Compare the old module with the new one, including the plug shape, before you order.

We list two versions:

  • A pre-LCI replacement for F20, F21, F22, F23, F30, F31, F32, M2, M3 and M4 as listed.
  • An LCI version in orange or ice blue for F30, F31, F34, F32, F33, F36, M3 and M4 as listed.

What part number do I need?

The pre-LCI listing states that it replaces OE no. 63319242162. It is an aftermarket part for BMW. The number is useful for matching it to your old module and for searching parts diagrams.

Confirm the number with a parts dealer using your VIN if you need to be sure. Cars vary by option pack and build date, and a VIN lookup removes the guesswork.

How do I replace the console light?

Exact clip positions vary, so work gently and expect some trial and error. A set of plastic trim tools helps and avoids marks.

  1. Switch the ignition off. Disconnect the battery if you want to be careful with the wiring.
  2. Remove any loose items from the cup holder area, along with any insert.
  3. Lift the trim around the cup holders with a plastic tool. Work along the edge and release each clip in turn.
  4. Find the light module and its plug. Note its position and how it clips in.
  5. Unplug the old module and fit the new one in the same orientation.
  6. Reconnect the battery, switch on the ambient lights and test before closing the trim.
  7. Press the trim back until each clip seats.

If you are unsure about wiring or the battery, have a professional do it. If you want to protect the area against spills, see the cup holder insert.

Can I change the colour to orange or ice blue?

On cars with the right connector, yes. Swapping to a module in a different colour is the simple route, and the LCI listing above offers orange and ice blue. The new module should be a match for your connector and position. Colour changes may not match the rest of your ambient lighting, so compare before you commit. Rules on lighting colours differ by country, though a console light is inside the cabin. Check local rules if in doubt.

Will it fit F32 and F20 too?

The listings above name the chassis they are made for, including F20, F21, F22, F23, F32 and others. We do not add chassis a listing does not name. Open the fitment table on the product page, then compare with your car. For the whole range, see the F30 collection and the lighting collection.

FAQ

Is the cup holder light a separate bulb?

In most cases it is a small LED module, not a bulb you replace on its own.

Do I need coding after fitting?

A like-for-like module normally needs none. If the light does not respond, ask a specialist rather than coding it yourself.

Why is only one light dead?

If the rest of the ambient lighting works, the module or its plug is the likely cause.

Is the replacement an aftermarket part?

Yes. It is an aftermarket part for BMW, sold with our fit guarantee.
