BMW G42 2 Series Accessories: What Fits and What Is Worth It

The BMW G42 2 Series (2022 onward) has a smaller aftermarket than the G20 3 Series, but several useful parts fit it. Mirror caps, gear selector trim, a magnetic phone holder and a fuel cap cover are the usual starting points. Always check the fitment table on the listing, because trim pieces that look alike can differ between cars with and without certain options.

What accessories fit a BMW G42 2 Series?

The G42 is the 2 Series coupe that replaced the F22 in 2022. It covers the 220i, 230i and M240i. Most of what you find for it falls into a few groups:

  • Mirror caps. Clip-on or replacement caps in gloss black or carbon-look finish.
  • Gear selector and centre console trim. Covers and panels, some in suede-style material.
  • Small exterior details. Fuel cap covers and similar trim.
  • Phone mounts. Magnetic holders that sit on the dash or vent area.
  • Start button covers. A cosmetic cap over the stop-start button.

Browse the full 2 Series G42 collection to see what is listed for your car. Not every part for older 2 Series models fits the G42, so use the chassis code and not the model name.

Does iDrive 7 vs 8 change which trim fits?

It can. Many premium carbon trim sets online are sold in separate versions for iDrive 7 and iDrive 8 cars. The reason is that the dashboard layout, the screen shape and the switchgear around it differ between the two systems. Trim that frames the centre console or the screen area is the most affected.

Before you order any dashboard or console trim, find out which system your car has. The G42 was launched with the newer curved display layout, but option packs and build dates vary, so confirm on your own car. Look at the screen and the controls, and check the build date on the driver door sticker. If you are unsure, the find your chassis page helps with the basics, and you can email us before ordering.

Simple parts such as mirror caps and fuel cap covers do not depend on iDrive. That is why they are the safest first purchases.

Which G42 parts are shared with the G20 and G22?

BMW builds the G20 3 Series, G22 4 Series and G42 2 Series on related platforms, and some small exterior and interior parts are shared or very close. Listings often name several of these chassis together. For example, our aftermarket mirror caps list the G42 with the G20, G22, G30 and G11.

Part type Often shared across G-chassis Check
Mirror caps Yes, across many G models LHD or RHD, camera or no camera
Fuel cap cover Often Listing must name G42
Gear selector trim G20, G23, G28 and G42 are named on some Selector style
Dashboard and console trim Rarely iDrive version and trim level

Do not assume a part fits because the G20 version does. Read the fitment list on the product page. Our 4 Series G22 / G23 / G26 collection is worth a look too, since some listings cover both.

Which G42 mods are easy clip-on jobs?

These need no tools beyond a trim tool, and no wiring:

  1. Mirror caps. Take off the old cap carefully, clean the surface and fit the new one. Read the listing, as some are overlays and some are full replacements.
  2. Fuel cap cover. Usually a stick-on or clip-on piece.
  3. Gear selector cover. Sits over the existing panel. Make sure the shape matches your selector.
  4. Magnetic phone holder. Place it where it does not block vents or controls.

For mirror caps, we list carbon-look glossy black mirror caps, a second glossy black set and bright black mirror covers. All are aftermarket parts for BMW. Compare the finishes and check whether the listing mentions a left-hand or right-hand drive car and any camera or sensor cut-outs.

Anything involving airbags, the steering wheel, wiring or coding should go to a professional. Do not remove airbag covers or trim around them yourself.

What does a start button cover do on a G42?

A start button cover is purely cosmetic. It changes the look of the stop-start button and adds a little texture under your finger. It does not change how the button works. Fit depends on the button shape, which varies by model and year, so confirm that the listing names the G42 or an identical button.

Some of our crystal-style start button covers list the G20, G22, G05, F40 and F44, but check the current fitment table for the G42 before ordering. If the G42 is not listed, do not order it. A cover that does not seat flat can catch on your finger or fall off.

Which accessories are not worth the money?

  • Full dashboard trim kits for the wrong iDrive. The most common return reason is a set made for the other system.
  • Anything listed only by model name. "2 Series" covers several very different chassis.
  • Cheap stick-on trim with no fitment list. If the seller cannot say which chassis it fits, skip it.
  • Parts that block airbag or sensor areas. Safety comes before looks.

Our fit guarantee covers parts that do not fit the car shown in the fitment table, but it is far easier to check first.

FAQ

Do G20 parts fit the G42?

Some do, mainly small exterior parts such as mirror caps. Dashboard and console trim often does not. Rely on the fitment list, not on the model series.

Is the G42 a 2 Series coupe only?

Yes. The G42 is the coupe from 2022. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is the F44 and the Active Tourer is the F45 or U06, so those parts differ.

Will these accessories damage the paint or trim?

Clip-on parts should not, if fitted carefully. Adhesive parts can mark surfaces if removed later, so apply them to clean, dry panels and keep the original part.

Can I fit these myself?

Mirror caps, fuel cap covers and selector covers are normally owner jobs. Leave airbags, wiring and coding to a professional.
