You have found the right part for your BMW, the chassis code matches, and then the listing says "LCI only". If that stops you in your tracks, this guide is for you. It explains what LCI means, when the major BMW models changed, which parts are affected and how to tell which version you have.
What LCI means
LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse. It is BMW's name for the mid-life update of a model, what other makers call a facelift. Part-way through a generation's production run, BMW refreshes the design, and cars built after that date are known as LCI cars. Cars built before it are pre-LCI.
The chassis code stays the same. An F30 built in 2013 and an F30 built in 2017 are both F30s, but the first is pre-LCI and the second is LCI. That is why a chassis code alone doesn't always tell you whether a part will fit.
What usually changes
An LCI keeps the car's structure and most of its body, but changes the parts that shape how it looks and feels. The parts most often affected are:
- Headlights and tail lights. New light designs are the most visible change in many LCIs, and the housings and mountings often differ.
- Bumpers. Front and rear bumpers are often restyled, which affects splitters, lips, diffusers and some grilles.
- Interior trim and controls. Some trim pieces, switches and infotainment parts change.
Many parts carry over unchanged, so plenty of parts fit both versions. The product's fitment table tells you which.
LCI dates for major BMW models
These years are approximate, so treat them as a guide and confirm with your car's production date.

How to tell which version you have
- Find the production date. The label on the driver's door pillar shows the VIN and, on many cars, the month and year of production. A free online BMW VIN decoder also shows the production date.
- Compare it with the LCI date. If your car was built after the LCI date for its model, it is most likely an LCI car. If it was built within a few months of the change, check the next step as well.
- Compare the parts themselves. Put a photo of your headlights, tail lights or bumper next to the product photos. If the shapes match, you have the version the part is made for.
Don't rely on the registration date. A car can be registered months after it was built, so a car registered after the LCI date can still be a pre-LCI build.
What this means when you buy parts
- Lights: headlights and tail lights are usually specific to one version. Check the fitment notes, and remember that lights can also differ between left- and right-hand-drive cars.
- Bumper parts: splitters, lips and diffusers are made for a particular bumper shape, and often for a particular bumper style such as M Sport. Check both the version and the bumper style.
- Grilles: check the version in the fitment table, as grille openings can change at an LCI.
- Interior trim: many pieces carry over, but some change. The fitment table says which cars each part fits.

Before you buy, check whether the part is plug and play or needs coding or adapter wiring, and budget for professional fitting.
