In most countries, LED angel eye bulbs are not automatically illegal, but the rules differ by country and you must check your local rules. In the UK, front lights must show white or amber, so coloured angel eyes are a show or off-road matter. The safe choice is white, in a bulb that fits your headlight type.
Are LED angel eye bulbs legal?
It depends on where you drive. Road lighting rules are set nationally, and they cover colour, brightness and how the lamp is approved. We cannot give you a legal ruling for your country, so check your local rules before you fit anything.
Two points hold true in most places. First, the colour of front lights is restricted, and white or amber are the normal choices. Second, a bulb swapped into a housing that was designed for a different type of bulb can fail approval or an inspection. Fitting a like-for-like replacement in the angel eye position is the lowest risk option.
In the UK, a headlight colour other than white or amber can fail an MOT. Always confirm with your local test station if you are unsure.
Which BMW headlights are angel eye compatible?
Bulb-type angel eyes are found on older BMW headlights from the 2000s, such as the E60 5 Series, the E90 3 Series and several others. Our white LED angel eye marker bulbs are listed for a range of these chassis. Check the fitment table for your exact car.
For E90 and E91 owners, see the 3 Series E90 and E91 collection. The E90 LCI (2008 onward) and pre-LCI cars can differ in headlight design, so confirm which you have before ordering.
Not every BMW uses a bulb for the ring. Newer cars use LED modules built into the headlight, and those are not a bulb swap. If your car has a sealed LED daytime running light, a bulb will not suit it.
Halogen vs xenon: which bulb fits?
The bulb type is set by the headlight, not by the colour you want. Halogen and xenon headlights on the same model can use different angel eye bulbs, so check which you have.
- Halogen headlights. The angel eye position commonly uses a bulb that the LED version replaces directly.
- Xenon headlights. These may use a different size or connector. Do not assume the halogen part fits.
The bulb size is usually printed on the old bulb or listed in the owner's manual. If in doubt, remove the old bulb and compare it with the listing. Our fit guarantee covers parts that do not match the fitment table.
Will I get a bulb-out warning on the dash?
Possibly. BMW monitors the current each bulb draws. An LED draws much less than the halogen bulb it replaces, so the car may read that as a failed bulb and show a warning.
Some LED bulbs are made to avoid this. They add a resistor or a built-in circuit to bring the load closer to the original. Check whether the listing says it is made for BMW and whether it mentions this. If a warning still appears, do not start changing coding yourself. Wiring and coding are best left to a professional.
What colour of angel eyes is allowed?
For road use, white is the safe choice, and amber is also used for indicator-type lighting. Blue, red, green and RGB colour-changing rings are for show or off-road use only. Rules differ by country, so check yours.
We list several halo ring kits, including a COB LED halo ring set and an RGB app-controlled halo ring set. The RGB set is for show use or off-road use. Fitting these inside a headlight means opening it, which is a job for a professional.
How do I fit LED angel eye bulbs?
A bulb swap is a basic job on many cars, but the steps depend on the model. For a typical bulb-type headlight:
- Switch off the ignition and let the lights cool.
- Open the bonnet and find the rear of the headlight.
- Remove the cover or cap over the angel eye bulb. Check the manual for its location.
- Twist and pull out the old bulb holder, then unplug the bulb.
- Fit the new LED bulb the same way round and refit the holder and cover.
- Switch the lights on and check the ring lights evenly.
Handle LEDs by the base. If a bulb flickers or the dash shows a warning, stop and have it checked. See our lighting collection for other options.
FAQ
Are coloured angel eyes legal on the road?
Usually not. White or amber is the normal rule for front lights, but rules differ by country. Treat coloured rings as show or off-road use and check your local rules.
Do LED angel eye bulbs cause an error?
They can. The car may read the lower current as a failed bulb. Bulbs made for BMW with error handling reduce the risk, but cannot guarantee it.
Will LED angel eye bulbs fail an MOT?
That is up to the tester and the colour and condition of the light. White bulbs in the correct fitting are the safest option. Check with your test station.
Are these genuine BMW bulbs?
No. They are aftermarket parts made for BMW, not supplied by BMW.
