CANBUS on an LED interior kit means the bulbs are built to work with the car's bus-monitored lighting circuits, so the car does not read the low LED current as a blown bulb. A CANBUS-rated kit is the right choice for most modern BMWs, but you still need the right bulb sizes and a quick check of every light after fitting. This guide covers sizes, error messages, fitting and colour.
What does CANBUS mean on BMW LED interior bulbs?
BMW cars check many of their lights for faults. A halogen bulb draws a known current. An LED draws far less, and a basic LED bulb can look like a dead bulb to the car's control unit.
CANBUS-rated bulbs, often called error-free, are designed to avoid that. They add resistance or a small circuit so the car sees a normal load. The name comes from the CAN bus, the data network BMW uses to link its control modules.
The label is not a guarantee for every car and every light. It is a design aim. Results depend on the chassis, the model year and the light position.
Which bulb sizes do I need?
Interior bulbs on BMWs are mostly small wedge bulbs and festoon bulbs. Festoon bulbs are the double-ended, tube-shaped type used in dome and reading lights. They come in different lengths, so size matters.
The sizes differ by chassis, trim level and options. A car with a sunroof, a vanity mirror light or footwell lights has more positions than a base car. Do not guess from a forum post.
- Pull one old bulb from each position and read the size marked on the glass or base, or measure the festoon length.
- Count the positions: front and rear dome, map lights, vanity mirrors, boot, glovebox, footwell, door and plate light.
- Compare that list with the bulb list on the kit page.
Our kits list the bulbs they include. Check the listing against your count before ordering. The fit guarantee covers a part that does not match the fitment table.
Will LED interior lights cause error messages?
They can. The usual symptoms are a bulb failure warning on the dash, a light that flickers, or a light that glows faintly when the car is locked. Plain LED bulbs without CANBUS support cause most of these.
A CANBUS kit reduces the chance of a warning but cannot remove it for every car. Some cars have the check on only certain circuits. Others are fussy about low-load bulbs in the footwell or the plate light. If a warning appears, try this:
- Refit the bulb the other way round. LEDs have polarity and many fail to light one way.
- Check the bulb is seated and touching both contacts.
- Swap in the original bulb for that position and see if the warning clears.
- Ask a specialist about coding. Do not change lighting coding yourself unless you know the system.
How do I fit a BMW LED interior kit?
This is an easy job on most cars. It needs no tools beyond a plastic trim tool and a small flat screwdriver for some lens covers.
- Switch the lights off and let the car sit so the old bulbs cool.
- Prise each lens or cover off gently at the notch. Use a plastic tool to avoid marks.
- Pull the old bulb out. Note the position and orientation.
- Press in the matching LED bulb. If it does not light, turn it round.
- Test the light before closing the cover.
- Refit the cover and repeat for each position.
- Lock and unlock the car, open a door and check for dash warnings.
Footwell lights are often tucked under the dash or the door sill, and the access varies by model. If you are not comfortable working near wiring, ask a professional.
Warm white or cool white: which looks best?
It is a matter of taste. Cool white, around 6000K, looks bright and crisp, and it is the usual choice for kits. Warm white looks closer to the original halogen glow and sits more naturally with older cabins. Cool white often looks blue next to warm trim and ambient lighting.
Brightness is also worth thinking about. LEDs are far brighter than halogens. A reading light that is too strong can annoy the driver at night. Choose with your cabin trim in mind. If you have ambient lighting, see our lighting collection for matching options.
Which BMWs does a kit cover?
Kits are sold by chassis, because bulb counts and sizes differ. Check the fitment table on the listing before ordering. These are the kits we list:
- A multi-chassis kit covering 1, 3, 5 and 7 Series chassis from E36 to F30 listed on its page.
- A kit for 1, 3 and 5 Series including E87, E90, E60 and F10 on its listing.
- A 3 Series kit listing E30 to F34 on its page.
Not sure which chassis you have? Use the find your chassis page. For the most common 3 Series cars, browse the F30 collection and the E90 collection, or the wider interior collection.
FAQ
Are CANBUS LED bulbs legal in a BMW interior?
Interior lights are generally less regulated than exterior lights, but rules differ by country. Check your local rules.
Do LED interior lights drain the battery less?
LEDs use less power than halogen bulbs, so a light left on drains the battery more slowly. Fix the cause of any light that stays on.
Why does one LED flicker or glow when the car is off?
A small leakage current can make some LEDs glow faintly. A different bulb or a load resistor usually fixes it. Ask a specialist if it persists.
Will the kit fit my car?
Match your chassis and trim to the fitment table on the listing. If it is wrong, the fit guarantee applies.
