BMW LED Mirror Indicators: Fit, Wiring and Legality Guide

A BMW LED mirror indicator can be replaced on its own. You do not need a new mirror. Sharing across chassis is limited, so match the part to your chassis code and mirror type before you buy. Coding and legality depend on the exact part and your country, so check both.

Which BMWs use the same mirror indicator?

Indicators are shaped to the mirror housing, so they follow the mirror generation, not the model name. The aftermarket listing we stock for the earlier cars covers F20, F30, F34, F36, E84 and F87. In plain terms that is the 1 Series F20, the 3 Series F30 and F34 GT, the 4 Series Gran Coupe F36, the X1 E84 and the M2 F87.

The G-series listings are separate parts. They cover G38, G12, G20, G30, G31, G32, G14, G15, G16, G11 and F90 M5, depending on which listing you open. They do not fit the F-series mirrors above.

Chassis group Approx. years Where to look
F20, F30, F34, F36, E84, F87 2009-2021 F-series and E84 dynamic indicator
G30, G31, G38, G11, G12, G14, G15, G16, G32, F90 2015 onward G-series indicator or sequential version

Do not guess from the model name. Our chassis finder shows how to read your code. Check LCI or pre-LCI status and whether your mirror is the standard type. Cars with a mirror camera or unusual housing may differ, so compare the listing photos with your mirror.

How do I remove a BMW mirror indicator?

On most cars the indicator sits in the underside of the mirror housing, or in the lower part of the cap. Removal usually means taking off the mirror glass and cap, then releasing the clips holding the lamp. Methods vary by chassis, so follow a guide for your exact car.

  1. Tilt the mirror glass fully and release it carefully. The clips snap, so use plastic tools only.
  2. Unplug the glass heater and any other connectors.
  3. Free the cap or lower housing from its clips.
  4. Release the indicator and disconnect its plug.

Mirror glass sits close to wiring for the heater, fold motor and sensors. If you are not comfortable here, ask a specialist. Wiring and coding are not a good place to learn.

Do dynamic indicators need coding?

It depends on the part. Many plug-in replacement units simply swap the lamp and need no coding. Some LED parts may trigger a bulb-out warning, and a few setups need a resistor or a coding change. The listing should say what is needed. If it does not, ask us at info@bmwmods.com before you order.

Coding changes the car software. Have a professional do it, or use a trusted shop with the right tools.

Are sequential indicators legal?

Rules differ by country and sometimes by inspection body. Some places allow sequential or dynamic mirror indicators if they meet lighting regulations for colour, brightness and flash rate. Others do not accept parts without approval marks. Read your local rules or ask your testing station before fitting. Yellow or amber is the usual colour for indicators. Do not fit another colour for road use.

We sell these as aftermarket parts. The buyer is responsible for checking they are allowed where the car is used.

Why is my mirror indicator hyper-flashing?

A fast flash usually means the car sees a low load. LEDs draw far less current than a filament bulb, so the car may read a fault. Hyper-flash can also come from a failed LED, a damaged plug or water in the mirror housing.

Check in this order:

  • Is the plug fully seated and free of corrosion?
  • Does the other side flash normally?
  • Did the fast flash start right after fitting a new LED part?

If it began after the swap, the unit may need a load resistor or a coding change. If it began on its own, the lamp or wiring is more likely. Wiring faults need a specialist.

How do I fit LED mirror indicators?

  1. Confirm your chassis and mirror type with the listing.
  2. Remove the old indicator as above.
  3. Connect the new plug and test with the ignition on before closing the housing.
  4. Clip the lamp in, refit the cap and glass, and test left and right.

FAQ

Can I replace just one mirror indicator?

Yes, but a pair keeps the look and flash pattern even. Mixed old and new lamps can also behave differently.

Why is my BMW mirror indicator not working?

Common causes are a failed LED, a loose plug, moisture in the housing or a wiring break. Check the plug first, then test the part.

Will a mirror indicator for F30 fit F31?

The listing names the chassis it fits. F31 is not in the F-series listing, so check the fit table or ask us first.

Do I need to code the car?

Not always. It depends on the part and the car, so check the listing and ask a professional.
