BMW Window Switch Buttons Worn or Missing: E90 and E46 Fix

If the window works but the button cap is cracked, shiny, faded or gone, you need a new cap, not a new switch. If the window does nothing at all, the switch, its connector, the motor or the regulator is at fault. A quick test in the steps below tells you which.

Why do BMW window switch buttons wear out or fall off?

The caps on E46 and E90 switches are small plastic parts that get pressed thousands of times. Over the years the finish wears through, the plastic cracks at the pivot, or the cap pops off the stem. Heat, sun and skin oils speed it up.

Worn caps look tired but the switch underneath often still works. That is why it pays to check before buying anything.

Is it the button cap or the whole window switch?

Run through these checks in order.

  1. Press the exposed stem or the damaged cap by hand. If the window moves, the switch is fine and only the cap has failed.
  2. Try the same window from the other switches, for example the driver's master switch. If it works there, the door switch is the suspect.
  3. If you hear a click or a motor hum but the glass barely moves, think regulator or motor, not the switch.
  4. If nothing happens from any switch, check the fuse and the door wiring before replacing parts.
Symptom Likely cause Usual fix
Cap cracked, worn or missing, window works Cap only Replace the cap or button
Window works only from the master switch Door switch Replace that switch
Window works only one direction Switch contacts Replace the switch
Motor hums, glass stuck or slow Regulator or motor Inspect the door mechanism
Nothing from any switch Fuse, wiring or master switch Check the fuse, then wiring

How do I replace E46 window switch buttons?

The E46 (1997-2006) has the problem most often. Our aftermarket window switch repair button for the E46 is a replacement cap, so you keep your existing switch. Check the listing for the part number it references and compare it with your switch.

  • Allow 15 to 30 minutes. It is a simple job.
  • Use a plastic trim tool, not a screwdriver, to lift the switch panel from the door card.
  • Unplug the connector before you handle the switch.
  • Pull the old cap off the stem, or remove its remains, and press the new cap on until it seats.
  • Reconnect, test the window, then refit the panel.

Take a photo before you start so you know which way the switch sits. Front left and right caps can differ, so check the side stated in the listing.

How do I replace an E90 window switch?

The E90 saloon (2005-2011) and the E91 Touring (2005-2012) use a switch module in the door card. Whether you can replace only a cap depends on the module, so look closely at yours. If the contacts have failed, replace the switch.

  • Allow 30 to 60 minutes the first time.
  • Remove the switch surround with a plastic trim tool and unplug the connector.
  • Match the new switch to yours: master or single, and left-hand or right-hand drive.
  • Test every window and the mirror controls if your switch includes them.

For later BMWs such as the F30 and F10, see the master switch listings below. Our master power window switch for BMW F20, F30, F10 and related chassis and the window control button for F-series cars cover that generation. They are not for the E46 or E90, so check fitment before ordering.

Which part number do I need?

Do not guess from the model name alone. Door switches vary by chassis, by year, by number of windows and by drive side.

  • Read the number on the back of your old switch if you can see it.
  • Compare it with the number named in the listing.
  • Confirm chassis and drive side. If you are unsure of your chassis code, use our chassis finder.
  • Browse the E46 collection or the E90 and E91 collection for parts listed for your car.

If a part is listed for your car and does not fit, our fit guarantee applies. Contact info@bmwmods.com first.

What if the window still will not move?

Once the switch is ruled out, work from the simple to the hard.

  • Check the fuse for that window.
  • Look at the wiring in the door jamb boot, where cables flex every time the door opens. Breaks are common there.
  • Listen at the door card while pressing the switch. A hum with no movement points at the regulator.
  • Have a professional diagnose wiring faults and anything that needs coding or initialising after a battery disconnect.

A window that has lost its auto up or down function after a battery disconnect may only need re-initialising. The method varies by model, so check your owner's manual or ask a specialist.

FAQ

Can I replace only the button on a BMW window switch?

On some models, yes. The E46 has a dedicated replacement cap. On other chassis the cap and switch may be one unit, so check the listing.

Why does my E46 window switch cap keep falling off?

The stem or the cap's clip has usually worn or cracked. A new cap seated firmly should hold. If the stem is damaged, replace the switch.

Is it safe to fit a window switch myself?

Yes for most owners, with a trim tool and a little care. Leave wiring faults and coding to a professional.

Will a switch for an F30 fit my E90?

No. Switch layouts and connectors differ between generations. Always check the fitment table in the listing.
