Single vs Double Slat BMW Kidney Grille: Which Fits Yours?

A single slat kidney grille has one bar per opening. A double slat grille has two bars per opening and is the look used on BMW M models. Most standard cars leave the factory with single slat, and the double slat grilles sold in aftermarket form are styled after the M look.

Slat count is only the visual part. Fitment depends on your chassis, whether the car is pre-LCI or LCI, and what sits behind the grille.

What is the difference between single and double slat kidney grilles?

Look at one kidney opening from the front. If you see one horizontal bar across it, that is single slat. Two thinner bars stacked in each opening is double slat. The kidney shape, the clips and the surround are the same job either way. Only the bars change.

Double slat is often called the M style, or dual slat in listings. It does not make the car an M model. It is a cosmetic change, and the badge, brakes and engine stay as they were.

Point Single slat Double slat
Look Standard, quieter M-style, busier
Typical use Most non-M models M cars and aftermarket copies
Fit risk Low if chassis matches Same, check LCI and sensors

Which BMW models use single slat from the factory?

Most standard 1, 3, 5 and 7 Series cars of the E and F generations use a single bar layout. M cars such as the M3, M4 and M5 use the double slat look. Trims and packages can change this, and some markets differ, so look at your own car or your owner paperwork rather than trusting a rule of thumb.

If you drive an E90 saloon or F30, you almost certainly have single slat. The same goes for a standard F10. That is why the double slat grille is a popular change on these cars.

Will a double slat grille fit my pre-LCI or LCI?

This is where most wrong orders happen. A facelift (LCI) often changes the kidney surround and sometimes the clip layout. A grille made for one version may not click into the other. Our LCI vs pre-LCI guide shows how to tell which you have.

If you are not sure of your chassis, use the find your chassis page first. Our fit guarantee covers a part that does not match the fitment table shown.

Do aftermarket grilles block the front camera or sensors?

It depends on the car. Many older cars have nothing behind the grille except the radiator opening. Some newer cars carry a camera, a radar unit or an emblem plate there. A grille with solid bars or no cut-out can interfere with those.

Before ordering, open the bonnet and look through the grille. If you see a sensor or camera, check the listing for a cut-out or mention of it. If the listing is silent, ask us before you buy. A grille is not a part you should force into place.

Gloss black, matte or chrome: which finish lasts?

All finishes need a little care. Plastic with a gloss black coating can show fine scratches and stone chips on the front of the car. Matte hides small marks better but can look dull if it is left dirty. Chrome-look parts can pit if road salt is left on them.

  • Wash the grille with the rest of the car and rinse out grit.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners and rough cloths on gloss black.
  • Wax or a ceramic coating helps any finish, but check what the maker allows.

Quality varies between aftermarket suppliers. Look at the photos and fitment notes, not only the finish name.

How do I remove and replace a kidney grille?

The method differs by chassis, so treat this as a general outline and check a repair guide for your car.

  1. Open the bonnet and look for the retaining clips on the top edge of the grille.
  2. Release the clips with a plastic trim tool. Do not pry with metal.
  3. Lift the grille away and note where each clip sits.
  4. Check for sensors, wiring or emblem fixings and disconnect them only if you know how.
  5. Press the new grille in until every clip seats. Look for even gaps all around.

If your car has parking sensors, a camera or radar near the grille, have a professional handle any wiring.
